Shawn
Bockoven spoke about
streaming and compression technology using low or no cost
compression software and techniques for web delivery.
Shawn Bockoven
manages METV, a P.E.G. Television Station in Merced, CA and is
the station engineer--Just an all around 'technogeek' type of
guy. Shawn has been working in video and film industry
over 25 years. He has a beautiful wife who puts up with him
and three wonderful children under the age of 20. On a nice
day, you will find him tiling or laying wood floor, replacing
fence posts, sitting by a fire and hitting the weights. His
favorite TV shows are Battlestar Galactica, Friday Night
Lights, Big Bang Theory, and Life. Favorite movies are Blade
Runner, The Matrix (Not the sequels), Dune the extended
version, Green Mile, Napoleon Dynamite and The World According
to Garp.
Director of photography (DP),
Mark Herzig showed unique camera moves, angles and lighting
tricks in cinematography. Mark
is an award-winning director of photography.
Mark works on commercials, corporate image, and fiction
narrative. He has taught cinematography at the Academy of Art
Institute in San Francisco, and the PCFE Film School in
Prague, Czech Republic, and is currently writing “Practical
Cinematography”, based on his lecture notes. “What I bring is
not only an eye for light and framing, but a sensibility that
enables a variety of narratives, each with its own distinctive
shape and style, its own meaning, its own set of emotions and
thoughts.
With many lights or few, my strategies seek to bring clear,
coherent definition to the story while remaining flexible
enough to roll with the changes that are the only constant in
filmmaking. Experience has taught me to use the tools rapidly
and decisively; what unfolds before the lens has a brief life,
and that essence must be captured before it is gone forever.”

Gabriel Mitri,
Regional Account Manager for
Matrox Video Products. “Need I/O for the Mac? The hot new
product from Matrox
that won four prestigious awards at NAB 2008 will be presented
live in action. They donated a
MXO2*! Matrox MXO2
is the first truly portable device that gives you
broadcast-quality input/output, monitoring, and up/down/cross
conversion to streamline your workflow with Apple Final Cut
Studio 2. It’s MacBook Pro and MacPro compatible, fits in your
laptop bag, can run for hours off a field battery (or its AC
adapter), and weighs under 3 ½ lbs.
Matrox MXO2
connects to a MacBook Pro via the ExpressCard/34 slot and to a
MacPro via the internal PCIe slot. Everything you need to
connect to both systems is included in the
Matrox MXO2
package so can easily more it around as needed. This is the
only mobile product on the market that gives you all the I/Os
you need plus supports the full range of workflows that you
are likely to encounter. It supports ProRes 422 and ProRes
422 HQ and also gives you the freedom and flexibility to use a
wide variety of other codecs and video formats. In HD for
example, it also supports HDV, DVCPRO HD, XDCAM HD, XDCAM HD
422, and XDCAM EX workflows. Since it takes full advantage of
the high bandwidth of the PCI Express bus (It is not a
FireWire 800 device.), it also lets you work in 8- and 10-bit
uncompressed mode.
Matrox MXO2 realtime 10-bit hardware scaling on the
outputs gives you maximum flexibility. You can upscale from
NTSC or PAL to either 720 or 1080. You can downscale 720 or
1080 HD footage to NTSC or PAL. This feature is particularly
useful when you need to master both HD and SD because it lets
you output both simultaneously from the same timeline. It is
also invaluable when you need to proof DVD content from an HD
video source or make quick SD rushes from HD material.
Matrox MXO2's
realtime cross conversion in hardware can save you hours of
rendering when your source material does not match your
client’s delivery requirements. Not only is
Matrox MXO2
powerful, versatile, and portable, it’s also amazing
affordable at just $1595.”

Dinesh Payroda, a graphic artist from the

CSUS, showed us some cool videos incorporating
Photoshop filters and graphics and offered some tips on how to
improve our videos by using them.
Rob Neep demonstrated the really neat
Steadicam©-like unit he had built. We were
amazed at the wonderful shots he got with it. He also showed
us a terrific video he made for CSUS (using the unit to get
the smooth tracking shots) and shared a few clips from his
special effects laden movie, “Worlds
Away”
Rueben
Plaza from
Cerebus Playground showed off the creative
stop-action special effects they created for their video, “LeeAzon”.
He treated us to a few more videos and got us excited about
shooting with a still camera and using filters in a whole new
way!

www.peppers.tv (sponsors of our June, July, and August 2008
meeting)
"www.peppers.tv has three staff members who are
excellent FINAL CUT PRO editors (Wil, Jason and Pat).
Wil Wells is their Creative Director and excels in all
areas of Motion Graphics, blue screen and virtual set design,
and web site creation and design (we add video to websites
too). He is also a composer.
Pat Crandley is primarily an FCP
editor, but his area of expertise is in file organization. He
is the keeper of all our hard drives. We actually include a
hard drive in the cost of any sizeable production…the client
pays, they own it, we keep it here. He is also does motion
graphics and 3D visualization…creating environments that don’t
yet exist (can do things like buildings not yet built but the
client needs to see them “in the picture”, crime scene
reenactments, human body modeling for medical videos).
Jason Broussard is primarily a FCP
editor, but also shoots, designs websites and does motion
graphics. He also shoots stills for us.
Janice Davis, who used to own
Take 1 Productions, joined Sue Peppers at
www.peppers.tv and is now the Executive Producer there,
handling all video project management. She has much insight
into government bidding, and production budgets.
STUDIO 50 – houses
www.peppers.tv, the primary company, and subleases to
Luminosity Studios (Tania Van Allman – logo design, biz
cards, simple websites), Art of Marketing (Doug Reitz,
print graphics and book layout and publishing), Nimbus
Public Relations and Marketing (Bill George, Corporations
and politics), and Capture Audio (Aaron Kinney, sound
booth, audio mixing, on site recording).“ |
